Description   Fishing decks for bridge over Wolf River.

Unique
Challenges
The Village of Winneconne and The Wisconsin Department of Transportation were confronted with a problem on State Highway 116. The bridge that spans the Wolf River in Winneconne is the only state-managed bridge from which people are allowed to fish. People fishing from the bridge were crowding out pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The Village of Winneconne wanted to preserve the tradition of fishing from the bridge, but how could they keep the privilege and also keep foot and bicycle traffic moving safely? Could this be accomplished without completely replacing the bridge?

Solution   Larson designed two 10 foot by 80 foot fishing platforms that run along either side of the bridge. This gives anglers plenty of room to fish and leaves the walkways open for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. This solution is cost-effective, produced no environmental or waterway impacts, and complemented the materials making up the existing bridge.
