Description   New gymnasium and classroom addition constructed for an existing school facility. The existing parking lot was modified to provide additional parking and a new drop off/pickup area.

Unique
Challenges

  • Site was very confined with a limited amount of green space to provide for storm water treatment

  • Due to the increase in impervious area at the site, additional storm water treatment was necessary in order to comply with the requirements of the City and Watershed District

  • Close proximity of a large wetland required more stringent measures for storm water treatment

  • Grades for a portion of the site prohibited the storm water for that area from being directed to the new storm water treatment pond
  •

Solution   To provide storm water treatment and control the discharge rate for the portion of the site that could not be drained to the storm water treatment pond, a rain garden was constructed to treat and infiltrate a portion of the storm water before discharging to the City’s storm sewer system. Larson designed the retention pond was with a filtration shelf to provide additional treatment of the storm water before discharging to the wetland area.
