Description   Designed a shippable skid for a hydrolyzer unit for a manufacturer of environmental systems.

Unique
Challenges
The client company is a major supplier of power industry environmental systems and needed a skid for their hydrolyzer unit that could contain the unit while it was being shipped as well as when it is being operated. The hydrolyzer is part of a system that converts granulated urea to ammonia, which reacts with boiler combustion gases to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Because the skid had to be shippable, the piping had to not only meet ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) standards, but also additional leakage-avoidance criteria.

Solution   Larson designed the 35-foot skid for the hydrolyzer pressure vessel and a shell and tube heat exchanger. The design included piping and the controls required to react streams of concentrated urea solution and steam at 400 degrees Farenheit and 400 psig (pound-force per square inch gauge). Larson devised special flanges to meet the additional leakage-avoidance criteria. This elegant solution allows the manufacturer to ship the hydrolyzer and the receiving company to use it with a single design.
